Feeling Thankful on Election Day

I have really been looking forward to the end of this year’s election. It seems like it has been going on forever and I have been worried that the election seems to be much more about the politician’s personalities than the serious issues at hand.

However, when I voted this morning I felt such a sense of pride in this country and honor that I have the opportunity to vote. Even in a state where I am doubtful my vote makes a difference, I wouldn’t dream of giving up my voice by not voting.

On Election Day I am always thankful for such patriotic parents who taught me that voting was a special privilege. They always made sure that we knew they were voting and that it was an important duty. I know this is why I think voting is such a neat experience and why I feel it is so important.

Yesterday I had a brief online conversation with Dad. As he was saying goodbye he reminded me to vote. Dad, I wouldn’t miss it because of the great example of my parents. This is the best reminder that you could give me.

Halloween Party

Jessica's Baptism

Jessica Dawn Smith was baptised today! What a special event! Thank you for sharing this choice day with all us, Jessica. We are very proud of you and very happy for you. And we hope this day will be one you will remember with joy for the rest of your life.

Fun-filled Tradition

I just wanted to share a moment of reflection today.

I am grateful for all our family traditions. I am especially grateful for the tradition we share twice a year where we attend the Priesthood session of General Conference. It is a privilege for me to have the opportunity to spend time with my father, grandfather and uncles. I look forward to passing this tradition on to my own boys. In a few years we will have four generations in attendance. I am so thankful for the examples from the priesthood holders in my family. I am equally thankful for their example to my boys too. I am also full of gratitude for the teachings from the authorities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In a world full of confusion and lack of direction, the outlines, teachings and covenants help to make things clear.

Barbara and Grandma have become a significant part of the Priesthood Session tradition. They do a wonderful job of filling our bellies and showing appreciation for the priesthood in their lives. I hope they know our appreciation for them is equal.

A Day Worth Remembering!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LISA!

Today is a very special day! My memories of this day:
The day started out very tense because we had been scheduled for a c-section and knew this would be "the day". Although we were very excited to meet our baby, surgery isn't something to get excited about! (Lisa's due date was October 31, but the doctor had done an LS ratio...something to test to see if the baby's lungs are mature enough to be safe for birth...and felt that she was ready.) I think we were secheduled for 5:30 p.m., but there were other emergencies that kept pushing our time back. Sometime while waiting, I started having labor pains and wondered if this new baby would surprise everyone by being born before they could get us into an operating room. We were finally into the room and all went very smoothly, but what a surprise when the doctor said "You have a beautiful baby girl." We had 2 girls and 1 boy at home and somehow "logic" seemed to predict that this would be a baby boy. I had unpacked and washed all of our little boy outfits. I wasn't sure if I had heard right! But the thought passed very quickly and I was so happy to see my precious baby girl face to face. The moments with her were few because the nurses rushed her off for special care, telling us that she had swallowed some of the fluids when being delivered. She was kept under a "bonnet" that gave her needed oxygen and was not able to spend as much time in my room as I would have liked. She is a fighter, though, and continued to grow stronger each day. We stayed together in the hospital for 6 days, and throughout that time Mick and I tried to come up with the perfect name for her. We would each write down names we liked, then hand the list to each other. Each time we just couldn't agree on a name. Finally, on the 6th day we came to the name Lisa and there was no question...it was the name we had been searching for!
For the record: Lisa was born on Monday, October 1 at 9:17 p.m. in the Cottonwood Hospital in Murray, Utah. She weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 1/2" long. The doctor who delivered her was E. Keith Hansen, the same doctor who later delivered all 4 of her children. Important facts, but none of them can possibly tell how incredible her birth was and how precious she is! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHRISTINA!

This is a very special day! My memories of this day:

On September 20 at approximately 5:30 p.m. things began to happen that would pave the road to a new life in more ways than I had ever imagined. Mick had gone to take some scouts to camp, but since the contractions were getting closer and more regular I called my sister, Shirley (a nurse) to ask what she felt I should do. She took me to the LDS hospital to be checked by the nurses to decide if this would be the day our new baby would come into this world. Christina must have already picked September 20 to be her special day! She was expected on or about October 2, but that wasn't soon enough for her.

Mick arrived at the hospital in plenty of time to be with me when she was delivered. I have always been very thankful for that blessing. It is such an amazing experience to watch a precious spirit being born, one that is best shared with the father!

Before Christina was born I felt I knew her. When they put her into my arms, I remember so well feeling that we had met before! What an amazing spirit she is! She had a very slightly turned up nose, a feature that is darling in a newly born baby. Her color was very good and she was energetic right from the start. I remember vividly just staring at her, never tiring of watching her every move. As I did just that, I said to the nurse in my room, "Oh, I have waited so long for this precious little one!" She asked me warmly how long I had been married. Imagine her shock when I said 11 months!

For the record: Christina was born on Friday, September 20 at 10:46 p.m. in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. She weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. The doctor who delivered her was James Marchand. Important facts, but none of these bits of information can tell anyone just how amazing her birth was!

Happy Birthday, Christina, and as Uncle Steve would say..."and many more"!

It's finally here....

...and what a special day it is. I do not usually get excited for my own birthday. However, I do get excited when it comes to celebrating others. Today's celebration is exceptionally special amongst us all. Christina never forgets to celebrate ours. Thank you for taking your time to celebrate our birthdays and yours with us. We are so blessed to have you in our lives.

Grandma Davies - Home At Last!

Grandma Davies has returned to her home after an extended stay at Health South. She is getting stronger every day and it is easy to see just how happy she is to be home. It is wonderful to see how happy Grandpa is to have her back in their home, also! They really are a special couple and have grown very close over the many years they have spent together. Your prayers, visits and phone calls will be greatly appreciated. (495-1962)

Happy Labor Day!

I wish you all a Happy Labor Day! This day always reminds me of Dad. Even though I only remember really working on Labor Day once (I think we were staining the wood on the gazebo), every Labor Day I think in my head "why do you think its called Labor Day?" and I get a big smile. We are so lucky to have such an amazing dad. I remember lots of fun Labor Days at the cabin too. I miss my family and I love you!

I just wanted to personally thank each one of you for remembering my boys on their birthdays.
It has been a fun month with all the celebration. As I said in my personal blog, I have enjoyed the celebration that has brought us all together. Each one of my family members have individual values and wonderful characteristics which I hold dear. It is those characteristics that have influenced my life and make up who I am.

I especially want to thank you mom and dad. You both have been a great example many times throughout my life. It is nice to know that even as an adult, you continue to be at my side. My sisters equally have inspired me in so many ways. I know that I have my weaknesses and I am far from perfection.(This is a secret from my boys, lol. Like my father, I tell my boys I am perfect.) However, I hope that you know that each one of you know my love for you and my actions have been nothing less.

I hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day tomorrow as well. No worries, dad. I will be hard at work.

First Jordan, I hope you had a "totally wicked" day. I cant believe how much you have grown. From what I've seen you are a great big brother. I wish you the bestest year ever.

Now Brendan, happy birthday. you are your dads "mini me" (your mom can explain) I love seeing you at the family parties. you too are growing so fast. have a great year and get into just enough trouble to keep your parents on their toes.

Faithful Service

After 5 years 4 months of faithful service, Robert Michael Breitling was released as bishop of the Draper River View 2nd Ward today. The sacrament meeting was very spiritual and the farewell talk that he gave was exceptional. What an amazing, choice man our ward was blessed to have as bishop. The picture you see shows him with his first counselor and his wife, who are the new bishop and mother of our ward. We have a great love for them and know that they will serve faithfully with an eye single to the building of the Lord's kingdom. There have been many faith-building experiences throughout this time and we are grateful for the opportunity we have had to work with such a wonderful ward. When Mick was called to the position of bishop I was told that it was a calling extended to both of us. The work has always been done by him and the weight has been his to bear, but I am grateful that I have been able to serve in the capacity of his companion. It is an experience like no other. Watching him grow in his love for the Lord and his dedication to doing what is right has been so wonderful. Of course he and I will continue to do our best to serve in whatever capacity the Lord has in store for us with grateful hearts that this gospel is one of love and service to each other. Robert, Andrea, Jordan, Brendan, Trevor, Dad and Mom Breitling, Barbara and Mark were with us today and we are so grateful for their love and support. We truly feel blessed beyond measure.

Happy Birthday Grandpa Davies!

I have been thinking of you a lot today. I am so thankful that you are my grandpa! I have so much love and respect for you. I hope you are having a good day even though Grandma is not quite ready to celebrate with you yet. I wish I could give you a hug in person! I am sending one to you across the country, I hope you can feel it!

Notes on Newest Surgery for Grandma Davies

Grandma Davies is in St. Mark's hospital recovering from her back surgery (August 8). She is in room 50W30 (phone number for St. Mark's: 268-7074) and will be released today or tomorrow (if there are no further complications). The surgery she had was to fuse five of her lower vertebrae in an effort to relieve the constant pain she has had to live with. Your prayers and calls and/or visits will be of great comfort to her and to Grandpa. Update: Grandma has been moved to Health South as of this afternoon at about 4:00. She needs more specialized care before being sent home and this will be better for her than long-term hospitalization. The phone number that goes direct to her room is 565-6722. (Room 1021, Bed 2) I haven't been able to visit with her today, but Grandpa says she is doing as well as can be expected considering what she has been through. She smiles, but he says that it is clear to see that she is in quite a bit of pain. When I tried to talk to her just now she said there is a physical therapist in her room making her work through the pain. I've been told that the only difference between a physical therapist and a terrorist is that you can negotiate with a terrorist! Thanks for that information, Mick! :) The doctor's are not sure how long Grandma will need to stay at Healthsouth. It is lonely for her there so your calls and visits would be greatly appreciated by her and Grandpa, too! And please keep them in your prayers. Another update: The address for Healthsouth is 8074 South 1300 East. It is on the west side of 1300 East just a little bit south of Macey's.

The boys had a wonderful time at the Bees game and were definitely spoiled. Jordan had so much fun that he couldn't sleep when he got home because he was so excited. He wandered the house, took a bath, and read for a while before he was calm enough to sleep. Both Jordan and Brendan told me all about the car ride, the game, and how much fun Aunt Christina is. We love when she comes to visit!

In case any of you haven't heard yet, Steve and I will be visiting at the end of July! :) Our plane lands in Salt Lake the afternoon of July 26. Steve is leaving on Thursday and I will be there until Saturday night. I am soooo excited to see everyone! I miss you all a lot.

New Baby Born to Kate and Adam Day!

Congratulations to Adam and Kate Day! Their little girl was born Tuesday, July 8 at 4:00 in the afternoon. Her name is Nora Kate and she weighs 8 1/2 lbs. and is 20". Mother and baby are doing well. What a special time for this little (and growing!) family!

Celebration For Grandpa's 80th Birthday

The Robert L. Breitling family will be celebrating his 80th birthday with a fun-filled overnight event at Mt. Air. This will be on Friday night, August 1st as soon as people can get there. All children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are invited. Saturday, August 2nd there will be games, breakfast and lunch. Everyone is being asked to bring their own food and tents. There will be a program on Friday night to honor Dad (Grandpa) so please feel free to share a memory that is special to you.
On Sunday, August 3rd there will be a birthday open house celebration at the home of Mark and Barbara Wilson. The extended family and friends will be invited to this event and you are warmly invited to be there so that he can show you off to them!
These events should be filled with new memories of this special man and we hope you can all be with us.
